Tower of the town
| This tower was built in the XIII century and it is characterised by a simple square form. However, its origin could be older and belong to the Vialardi family that sold to the Commune its houses in order to build the commune palace also known as "broletto", For its remarkable height it was used as bell tower by the Commune which rang this bell in case of danger or to call the people and the senate to the meeting place. In 1925 patriotic tombstones were walled up at its base. There are no more bells and even the old watch of the XIV century has been removed in 1931. Next to the tower, you can find the old "broletto" square, which was badly refurbished by the Commune some years ago. Unfortunately, the old arcade structure and its architectural details were not properly renewed. In this place, there were the prisons and here the commune statutes were kept. During the Middle Age, the Commune council met in the square or in the parlour, to take decisions on war, alliances or new communities foundation. In that period, Vercelli, together with Milano and Venezia, was one of the main realities in the north of Italy. |
Torre di città
Di austera e semplice forma quadrata la torre si vuole sia stata edificata nel secolo XIII. Potrebbe tuttavia avere origine più antica ed essere appartenuta alla famiglia Vialardi che cedette al Comune le prioprie case per la creazione del broletto o palazzo comunale. L'altezza notevole la rendeva idonea all'uso di campanile per la campana del Comune che chiamava il popolo ed il senato all'arengo o avvisava in caso di pericolo. Alla base furono murate lapidi patriottiche nel 1925. Le campane sono scomparse e l'antico orologio del XIV secolo fu asportato nel 1931. Annessa alla torre sopravvive l'antica piazza del broletto, maldestramente riattata qualche anno addietro dal Comune senza valorizzarne l'antica struttura porticata ed i particolari architettonici. Qui erano le carceri e qui erano custoditi gli Statuti comunali. All'aperto nella piazza o nel salone si riuniva la Credenza del comune medievale per decidere della guerra, delle alleanze o della costituzione di nuove comunità quando Vercelli era, insieme con Milano e Venezia, una delle principali realtà territoriali dell' Italia Settentrionale. gs
